Cabinet refinishing costs
No two kitchens price the same.
Cabinet refinishing is a specialty process, not a room-painting job. Every kitchen is priced on-site because the variables are ones no online calculator can see.
Cabinet projects are always priced in person. The walkthrough is free.
What drives the cost of cabinet refinishing?
Number of doors and drawers. This is the closest thing to a unit of measurement. A galley kitchen with 14 doors prices very differently from a large kitchen with 40 doors, an island, and a pantry wall.
Layout complexity. Islands, peninsulas, built-in pantries, glass-front doors, detailed profiles, and inside-door finishing all add labor. Simple flat-front doors are the fastest; raised-panel and detailed profiles take longer.
Wood species and condition. Oak with deep grain may need grain filling for a smooth modern finish. Damaged veneer, water damage near the sink, or worn edges add repair work before finishing begins.
Existing finish. Previously painted cabinets, stained and varnished cabinets, and laminate or thermofoil each need a different prep approach. The wrong prep is why cheap cabinet paint jobs fail, so this step is never skipped.
Color change. Going from dark stain to white, or to any light color, typically needs additional priming and coats for full, even coverage.
Hardware and details. New hardware means filling old holes and drilling new ones. Soft-close upgrades, new hinges, and handle changes are priced with the project.
How your kitchen is priced
Every cabinet estimate starts with a count: each door and drawer front, plus the cabinet boxes they attach to. That count sets the size of the job, and the condition of the surfaces, the existing coating, and the finish system you choose set the rest. Two kitchens with the same number of doors can price very differently once grain filling, repairs, or a dark-to-light color change enter the picture. The walkthrough is where the real number comes from, and it is always free.
What does proper cabinet refinishing include?
A real refinish is a multi-step specialty process: thorough cleaning and degreasing (kitchens coat everything in airborne grease), sanding, bonding primer, sprayed or fine-finish topcoats, careful curing between coats, and full protection of your counters, floors, and appliances. Doors and drawers are removed and finished separately so every edge is coated.
Brushing wall paint onto cabinets is not refinishing. It will not level, it will not cure hard, and it will not survive daily kitchen use. When you compare bids, ask exactly what the process includes.
Is it cheaper to refinish cabinets or replace them?
Refinishing is usually substantially less expensive than full replacement. Replacement means demolition, new boxes, new hardware, and often new countertops, plus plumbing and electrical adjustments. If your cabinet boxes are solid and you like the layout, refinishing gives you the new-kitchen look for a fraction of replacement cost, usually on a much shorter timeline with far less disruption.
Replacement makes more sense when the layout does not work, the boxes are failing, or you are already remodeling the whole kitchen.
Why is every kitchen priced on-site?
Because the cost drivers are all things we need to see and touch: the door count, the profiles, the wood, the existing finish, the condition around the sink and stove, and the color change you want. Any number given without that look is a guess, and we do not guess with your money. The on-site estimate is free, and you get a written scope with your exact price.

What is the difference between painting cabinets and refinishing them?
A proper cabinet refinish is a specialty process: thorough cleaning and degreasing, sanding, bonding, sprayed or fine-finish application, careful curing, and protection of the rest of the kitchen. Brushing wall paint onto cabinets is not refinishing, and it will not hold up to daily kitchen use.
How long does cabinet refinishing take?
Most kitchens take several days, depending on the number of doors and drawers, the condition of the existing finish, and cure times. Your written estimate will include the expected schedule before work begins.
Do you provide free estimates?
